History
From Fergana, shaped through exchange.
FERGANAÉ grew from a journey of craftsmanship, exchange, and learning between Fergana and Japan.
Its roots lie in a grassroots technical cooperation project launched in 2023 with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), created to foster small businesses and entrepreneurship within local communities in the Fergana region. With leather and craftsmanship already deeply connected to the region, leatherwork became one of the project’s central initiatives.
A group of local craftspeople, led by Eldorbek Matmusaev, began refining their skills through training in Japan and continued exchanges with Japanese leather specialists. From construction and stitching to finishing and durability, the process has been one of making, evaluating, and improving—bringing together local knowledge with new techniques and perspectives.
Today, the workshop is based within a Social Protection Center in Fergana. Here, craftspeople work alongside people with disabilities, creating a place where production, learning, and the development of skills come together.
From craftsmanship, a new idea emerged.
Over time, the project revealed something beyond technical improvement: the possibility of creating products that could express Fergana itself.
Its leather. Its wool and silk. Its embroidery and color. Its traditions of making by hand.
FERGANAÉ emerged from this idea—not simply to preserve these traditions, but to bring them into conversation with contemporary design and everyday life.
Each piece is part of this continuing story: shaped by local materials and the hands of its makers, refined through exchange, and created with a view toward the future.
